1991

1991 was a very good year for me. I turned 2, Into the woods aired on PBS, and Whitney Houston sang the National Anthem at SUper Bowl XXV.

Let’s stick a pin in Into the woods for the time being – though I’m sure not for long – and focus on Whitney Houston’s legendary National Anthem. I’m sad to report I don’t remember watching it, but I’m almost certain I did. My family isn’t partial to football, but I know my mom liked watching the music and the halftime show.

I know I had heard the single countless times as the years went on, but it wasn’t until YouTube that I actually remember WATCHING her do it. I remember exclaiming, “Run Whitney, Run!” because I recognized those Nike Cortez sneakers from Forrest Gump. I remember thinking how cool it was that she wore a white TRACKSUIT. I remember that blonde gal in the stands with the bangs waving her flag – to this day I wonder where she is now and if being part of that video clip is the coolest thing that has ever happened to her.

I still watch it from time to time. It’s flawless, seemingly effortless, and one of my favorite ways to remember the legendary Whitney Houston.

I’d also like to highlight that this is the first time I’m sharing anything with color. I love color! I feel strongly that black & white is best suited to this style, but once in a while a pop of color really lends itself. Not always the case, but i’m really happy with the EFFECTIVENESS of the red here.

I’ve been unsuccessful in tracking down the photographer, but I can trace it back to the Tampa Bay Times Archives. Let me know if you have more info!
