This was also very early on. I knew I didn’t want to draw characters (yet!) and that I wanted to continue with paparazzi-like photos — photos that captured unplanned moments. Celebrities arriving and leaving places seemed to lend itself nicely. In this case, Walter McBride’s capture of Angela Lansbury leaving Sardi’s after the final performance of Blithe Spirit in 2009.

I always try to find a moment in an illustration that I love. Some element I get just right or the way a single line looks — something that is mine to love, often before the piece is even finished.
It’s her hair.
