Michael Urie is one of the greatest actors of our time. This is not news.
When I think about the kind of performances I’d like to give (not to be confused with roles I’d like to play), I think of Michael Urie. When I consider how I’d like my work to be received, I think of Michael Urie. And when I think of how I’d like to carry myself – professionally and through life – I think of Dame Judi Dench.
jk. I think of Michael Urie.
And then Judi Dench.
I admire him beyond his resume. He’s one of the good ones. When you take a step back and look at the people who show up for him you notice they are the most respected professionals our industry has – a compliment so completely not lost on him.
When I first saw this picture of his 2019 Met Gala look by Christian Siriano I saw everything I’ve ever wanted to be in one photo. I saw a gorgeous man, on a Broadway stage, in a spectacular, statement making costume, about to go have the night of a lifetime. It took my breath away. I want to know what that feels like. That confidence, that strength, that anticipation. I was far too old to feel comfortable to comparing it to a “reading Runway under the covers at night with a flashlight” moment, but it was in that quadrant.
